I have known the artist known as Joseph Curwen for many years. He is very reclusive in his art and it a pleasure to host him, albeit, on a toned down scale from his usual extra dark creations. I displayed a LVAN solo show at Homebase that ran from November until January titled “Everything Cool Has Been Done”. I continued to push my series of Girls With Guns and some smaller works. I redisplayed a series of breakfast cereal inspired spraypaint cans that originated for the Cereal Killers show a couple years prior but have never been displayed on the East Coast. I also displayed smaller works and a classic photo as well as making and packaging 25 limited edition(and sold out) “Dime Bags” that are hand sewn felt versions of a long running tag. The mural that I painted for the More Serious Business show at the NCC building on 3rd st Bethlehem , ended up on the front cover of the Morning Call Newspaper last weekend. There was also a full picture of my wall on the cover of the Saturday section deeper inside. It was an honor considering all of the talented, highly educated artists included in the show. I had a great time painting it and being involved in More Serious Business. Once again, the Underground is not Unnoticed.

“Homebase & Emerica proudly premiere “Stay Gold” to the 610 at the Bethlehem Skateplaz with the help of our friends at Stoketoberfest & Movies, Games & More* who will be providing a HUGE inflatable outdoor screen and sound system. We will be taking voluntary donations for the Bethlehem Skateplaza before the video plays so come wit ha few extra bucks to help us put money in the bank for Phase 2. ”

If you read skate mags (like any over the last 4 years) you know this team and this video are not to be missed. Consider this a cooler drive-in with out the cars, stale popcorn,and mandatory charge (but you will donate, right?) Its going to be Banger central between the Vid and the Best Trick Contest. All I can say is the usual ,Don’t miss it and see you there.

Jaguar Nono in “More Serious Business” exhibit opening Friday September 3rd

This First Friday is a big one for the LVAN all over the east coast. Ray Gurz is holding down the Dirty South, Lorna is bringing her “9 Muses” to Homebase, and Josh Novak will be involved in the “More Serious Business” exhibit in the old Bethlehem Steel on 3rd street.

“Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold “More Serious Business” an exhibit of painting, sculpture, photography, video, mixed media, installations, performance, film, computer-generated media, and conceptual work by 55 well-respected artists, from August 30 through October 1 at the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. Third Street, Bethlehem.“

I am honored to be involved with such a diverse collection of artists. I would love to invite everyone to join me at the opening reception on Friday September 3rd from 6:30 until 9:30. There will be food and drink as well as ”include entertainment by the Vitamin Eitelman Show (contemporary folk), the Monarch Dance Company (modern/contemporary dance), THE IMPOSTERS (classic blues and rock n roll). And Wind Walkers (blues, rock and jazz fusion).”

I worked hard to produce my biggest brush work mural to date , as well as including some past griptape work catching a second light. Stop out and help fill the building with skaters, its only a couple blocks away from both the SkatePlaza and Homebase, give me the fist to palm/palm to fist, check out all the other artists work, then lets walk/skate up to HB to check out the opening there too. And yes, I said free food and drink.

The LVAN is proud to present Lorna Doone in “9 Muses” Friday Sept 3rd

Lorna Doone has been working with Homebase and The LVAN as long as we have been doing group art shows. Working under the title of Lornography , Lorna has always brought a feminine touch to our mainly manly crew. Stop out to the shop to celebrate the opening of her first solo LVAN show, “9 Muses-portraits of women who inspire through their complete beauty.” This will also mark the release of a special print with all proceeds being donated to the The Nature Conservatory to help restoration efforts in the gulf.

Lorna has been working very hard to prepare for this show and is pleased to invite you all to Homebase this First Friday September 3rd to help her celebrate her photography and the beautiful muses that work with and inspire her. Look forward to a Very special window display opening night and the release of her print that will help benefit the clean up in the Gulf.

Ray Gurz in Marked Madness

Ray Gurz, one of the co-founding members of the LVAN, epitomizes the D.I.Y lifestyle that we focus on here. Ray runs LostSoul skateboards as well as skating as their Pro rider while filming for their upcoming Modern Needs film, he plays in multiple bands including the popular Bad American that recently released a 7″ record ( that has cover work by other LVAN co-founder, Giancarlo DeMarchi), works at both a huge shipping facility and co-managing Homebase. He is the premier skate event MC host, and all around Valley hype man. Along with motivating his team to film by leading with example in these final days, Ray has been working hard on his solo show opening Friday September 3rd in Myrtle Beach, SC at Studio B. If you happen to be in the area, stop in and give the fist to palm/palm to fist and tell him the LVAN sent you. Ray’s book Influence Victim is also still available here

I’m trying to keep the LVAN going strong and fresh in order to help more artists get more light we will be implementing an online profile section. We will come up with 5 or 10 questions for the artists to answer as well as showcasing some art, all here on the LVAN and our affiliated sites. This will allow us to bring you more art, more artists, and perhaps a slightly deeper insight to these artists. This feature will be used as a way to profile more artists as well as preview of up coming artists. Check back for the official start to begin soon.

As a small sample of this feature, I would like to introduce you to the art of Shurtman Pop Art

Shurtman came into Homebase a couple weeks ago along with Easton Pop Art and brought some of a series of paintings to give us a sample of his work. He was kind enough to allow me to take some flicks with the idea of this column. Take some time to enjoy these flicks and check out the rest of his work as well as contact him on ShurtmanPopArt. His page also says that he is opening a show at Suddenly Samantha, 140 E Northampton St. on Friday Nov 27th, stop out and tell him the LVAN sent you.

Andy Vasquez, The Furnitural Figures

Andy V is one of the second gen Hometeam crew. By that, I mean, That there was a day when Andy didn’t have a mustache and a good smith grind, but always had Valley Pride and a open attitude about skating and its history. As much as I try to be social with everyone, there is always one or two people that stand out as being genuine and sincere in the way they interact, I always saw that in Andy V. Over the years Andy has become a player in the game, filming video parts , getting photos, as well as school and his love of woodwork off the board.

Andy worked hard on his show and it went under the radar, it was different from many of the shows we have had before and didn’t receive the right amount of coverage, including here on the LVAN ,due to summertime , as well as my camera being stolen around the same time. Andy will continue to work on his woodwork, his art, and his skateboarding, and the LVAN will continue to keep him included.
