ARTISTS NEEDED FOR MAY BETHLEHEM ART WALK

A lot of people ask how they can get space to show their art  or expose their music with the L.V.A.N. The truth is, as much as we are flattered your noticing what were up to and as much as we want everyone on board, time as well as space is always limited. If you desire a show at Homebase , talk with us and please be patient, but this is an offer I think would be a great opportunity for ANY local artist or musicians to check out.

This seems like a great chance to network with other local artists and gallery owners, as well as display you talents to a wider base. Free set up and a chance to make some money, all while supporting downtown Bethlehem. contact samanthas@lehighvalleychamber.org for more info and tell  her the LVAN sent you

The Downtown Bethlehem Association (DBA), a council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce (GLVCC), is looking for artists and musicians to participate in the 2010 season of ArtWalks, which will take place on the last Saturday of May, June, July and August.

ArtWalk is a great opportunity for artists and musicians to showcase their talents to visitors to Bethlehem’s Main and Broad Streets.  The 2010 season will take place on May 29, June 26, July 31 and August 28 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Artists and musicians will be hosted by retail shops and restaurants in the Historic District and are welcome to participate while following this criteria:

No vendor fee will be charged for participation in ArtWalk.  However, artists and musicians MUST register with the Downtown Bethlehem Association.  Registration deadlines are as follows:

For May’s ArtWalk:  Register by Friday, May 7

For June’s ArtWalk:  Register by Friday, June 4

Recycled News.

This is an event that went down in Tokyo a couple month ago, but it is skateboarding, and recycling. So enjoy it again.

HARVEST by Haroshi. Exhibition at the PLSMIS Gallery in Tokyo

“Skate decks eventually see its life shortened by snapping, cracking and/or wearing out. Purchasing new decks is a never ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room. We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these. I decided to make some accessories with the old decks and this was the birth of Harvest. The works of Harvest are through the perspectives of a skater and as an artist. As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards. We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.”

And the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply. BRIAN BARTO’S Signs

Brian Barto , the older brother of our present showing artist Brett, has joined the LVAN with amazing results in the past. Brian is presently working hard toward his First Friday display in West Chester this May 7th.  I found the following preview flicks on Brian’s Facebook and got a nice email back from him explaining the origins of them..

From Brian,”(I)always dug carnival signs and backroads americana, so it’s a cool fit. All built from found barnboard, pallets, and roadside garbage (most from rt. 100 between w. chester and the valley).”

I really love the ones that cross over to urban slang, the Always Fresh one strikes me hard. Check back for more info on Brian’s West Chester show. Flyer to follow as soon as available to me.
